pre-blogger blogging

I had saved a bunch of musings (i.e. drunk ramblings) on my computer in hopes that I would be able to do something with it one day. And finally, that day is here! Now I can have it on my computer AND my blog. Let the children of the world rejoice and lick their lollipops ferociously...

here's the first one, I can't believe I thought I had all the answers! Oh, those were the days:

1979

Beginning or ending of an era? Surely a beginning for one just born. A kid in the 80’s— what were we? Baby boomers were something you read about in history books, and generation X seemed to be a popular subject on MTV and the news. But there we were, in the midst of a political, financial, and an entire upheaval of the human society. The 80’s…some recall it as the time of bad music. Bad hair. Bad clothes. To tell you the truth, I don’t remember all those aspects of it… I suppose it could be due to lack of memory...or maybe something else. I was climbing trees….walking the neighbor with the gang. Daily life included Kool-Aid, sit n spins, and a swing set. No cable, but Saturday morning cartoons were a must. Nintendo was an ingenious invention after our Atari finally broke. But what really defines our generation?

I think our generation has leaped from the days of oblivion to the dawn of knowing tomorrow.

We have been the entrepreneurs of the household computer, the internet, the new age of technology. Unfortunately, our generation is so divided that maybe we can’t put a single label on it. But as some of my kind have cried out, we don’t want to be labeled ! But we all need some sort of security blanket that we can wrap around ourselves and hide under, even if we don’t admit it. Sometimes we do need to be told by others that everything is all right, no matter how loud that independent tumultuous cry around you rings out. My generation, I’m afraid to admit, has lost something. Too much lack of caring, too little compromise, to little of turning off the computer to go look at nature, too much of downloading a serene picture. I’m admittedly guilty of it too,but the first step is acknowledgement…

Too many people are depressed. Why aren’t happiness and love the most treasured aspects of life? Is that what drives so many people including almost everyone I know to seek far away places, with different views and living styles? Or does it matter where you are? Maybe it just matters who you are, and what your surround yourself with.

Children today need more guidance. Parents are both working, with children going to day care at an earlier and earlier age. Scientific studies have shown that this does not affect the child. But since when can science look into a soul? Since a couple of years ago, I figure. We have developed some of the most enterprising technological advances, and yet we still drive to go even deeper, and deeper…until every channel after midnight is airing an infomercial selling happiness, prosperity, and bliss.

I once read that AIDS was nature’s defense from humans. A scary thought. We are all destined to die at the hands of an unknown. So, until then, do what you can. Do what you feel. But not all the time. You need to take a look at what others are feeling, and why they are feeling. Take a look as you go outside and you see a bird building a nest on the store across the street. They have adapted..they have tolerated our humanism… can we?
